The clever ways that Christmas carols help your child to grow

As Christmas draws closer, your child will love singing carols and festive songs. We take a look at how Christmas carols and nursery rhymes also help your child's development.

Rebecca Douglass has spent her entire career in early years education, has Early Years Professional Status and is a graduate in Early Education Studies and Early Years. She has been with Alpha Kindergarten Group for over a decade and is now oversees Park Lane Kids as Operations Director.

In the run up to Christmas, your child will be singing a whole host of different carols and Christmas-themed nursery rhymes both at home and at nursery. But singing these tunes does a lot more than simply bringing festive joy into your home, they will also help your child become a better learners!

According to literacy expert Mem Fox, studies in child development have found that if children know eight nursery rhymes by heart by the time they are four years old, they are usually among the best readers by the time they’re eight.

At Park Lane Kids, we use these carols and festive nursery rhymes to help your child grow in a number of ways:

1. They help your child's language development

The structure of nursery rhymes and carols means that they often use simple and repetitive phases – ‘Jingle Bells’ is a great example of this. In our baby room at Park Lane Kids, our experienced team know that children need to repeatedly hear spoken language and they use songs like these because they are easy for young children to remember and repeat.

Using repetitive songs like these can help develop your child’s memory and kickstart their speaking!

2. They support your child's mathematics skills

Our team use carols like ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ and other counting songs as a fun way to learn the sounds of numbers. This provides an important foundation for other mathematics skills and throughout the year, this can be supported with other nursery rhymes like ‘5 Little Reindeers Jumping on the Bed'.

3. It gives them a chance to get active and develop their physical skills

We often encourage our children to act out nursery rhymes, which is something they always enjoy! The best example of this is ‘Dingle Dangle Snowman’, where children develop their motor skills, balance and coordination as they act out the different parts of the song.

During Christmas at Park Lane Kids, we use our own original story to the tune of ‘Baby Shark’ as a festive song with lots of actions!

4. It helps them learn more about the world around them

Nursery rhymes are also fun ways to expand your child’s understanding of the world around them. Throughout the year, songs like ‘Old Macdonald Had a Farm’ help your child to learn about different animals while the song ‘Five Currant Buns’ introduces the concept of going shopping and paying for something.

At Park Lane Kids, our team might follow this up by helping your child to relate to this – for example by helping children to share their experience of going shopping with their parents or seeing animals at the farm. This is supported by frequent trips out of the nursery, visiting locations such as the greengrocers or library.

5. They are great for supporting different learning styles

At Park Lane Kids, our team will get to know each child and develop a plan to support their learning. We know that children learn in different ways and nursery rhymes can help support children with different learning styles.

Auditory learners process information best when they can hear information and nursery rhymes are a natural learning tool. On the other hand, some children can learn better when getting ‘hands-on’, so we use props and actions during nursery rhymes to support learning for these children.
